Tiles are made from a wide range of materials, from natural granite and marble to manufactured ceramic. Effective cleaning of your tiles begins with knowing what materials your tiles are made from, and choosing a cleaning system that is both effective and eco-friendly.
First, to natural stone. The biggest mistake many people make with granite or marble tiles in particular is to use harsh cleaning products, such as bleach-based cleaners. Not only will these products damage the beautiful colours in the natural stone, they will also, over time, damage the integrity of the tiles. The best cleaning solution for natural stone is regular cleaning with a gentle solution of soap and water. For tougher stains, Megasealed has a variety of MB StoneCare cleaning products specifically for stone.
Megaclean Green, a cleaner more suitable to ceramic tiles, is a natural and safe alternative that contains the essential oil of eucalyptus. This oil is renowned for its natural disinfectant properties, and is also very effective in removing dirt and mould from your tiles. Just spray Megaclean Green over your tiles, leave for 5 to 10 minutes and then wipe off.
Although ceramic tiles are a lot tougher than natural stone, it’s good to consider using natural cleaners as well as preventative measures, such as anti-fungal grout, to reduce any need for bleach-based cleaners. Grout also comes in a wide range of colours, so it’s easy to avoid white grout all together.
There’s no substitute for regular cleaning of tiles and grout to prevent the build up of dirt and mould, but it doesn’t follow that cleaning your tiles needs to be difficult, dangerous or costly. You can also try a more permanent grout solution, such as Megasealed’s Megagrout MG-11. This grout is made entirely of recycled and reclaimed materials, and can be applied by a professional within a day or two, and its unique two-part epoxy constitution makes it flexible, so that unlike other grouts, it moves with your house and won’t crack. It also has anti-fungal properties, as well as being resistant to grease and water – and is available in White.
A combination of natural cleaners and a good grout will have your bathroom looking like new for longer, without as much elbow grease or harsh chemicals.
